A call after a spell of high winds: a large poplar in a Great Barrow garden had split at the union between its two stems, and half the tree was lying across the customer’s garage with a car parked underneath. Both had taken damage.

Getting the weight off the garage

Nothing here could be dropped. Telephone lines ran straight through the work area, a glass greenhouse sat a few feet from the base, and the garage roof was already holding a load it was never built for.

So it came apart in small pieces. Our climber worked along the fallen stem, taking it back a section at a time and lowering the weight off the roof by hand rather than letting it go. The aim was simple: get the tree off without adding a single thing to the damage already done. That is how it came off.

Back for the standing half

What was left was the other half of a failed union — a one-sided stem with a fresh tear down the fork and nothing holding it but habit. Not something to leave standing over a garage and a greenhouse.

We came back and took that down too, working from the top and roping the limbs out clear of the lines and the glass, down to the stump.

Chipped on site, timber away

The customer wanted the chip, so all the brash went through the chipper and was left spread in the garden as mulch. The cordwood and the trunk went with us.
