What Is Stump Grinding?
When a tree is felled, the stump is left behind in the ground. Stump grinding is the process of using a specialist machine to grind that stump down below the surface — typically 4 to 6 inches deep — so it’s out of sight, out of the way, and no longer a trip hazard or an eyesore.
It’s the most practical and cost-effective way to deal with a leftover stump for the vast majority of domestic gardens.
Our grinder is compact enough to pass through most standard garden gates, so access is rarely a problem. We grind the stump to a maximum depth of 5 inches, which is sufficient for turfing, paving, planting beds, or simply making the area usable again. The resulting wood chips are left as mulch.
Is Stump Grinding Right for You?
It’s the right choice if you want to:
Get rid of a stump that’s in the way
Prepare the area for turfing or planting
Lay paving or decking over the area
Remove a trip hazard from your garden
It’s worth being clear about what the process involves so there are no surprises on the day.
Stump grinding does not remove the entire root system. The main roots will remain in the ground and will gradually break down naturally over time.
It may not be sufficient if you need the full root ball removed for construction or if you’re replanting a tree in the same location
